Yesterday's Statement is Inoperative?

For what it's worth, this week's statement from New York Theatre Workshop, fighting back against their critics, is no longer announced or linked to on their homepage. The URL is still viewable, though. It was issued Monday or Tuesday.

Oh well, there wasn't much new in the statement anyway, although Katharine Viner seems to get the larger share of the attack this time. But it's the penultimate paragraph that's the best:

"...we are disheartened that NYTW has been so badly misrepresented in the press, and criticized by others looking to further their own political or personal agendas."

Okay, Playgoer, tell all. What exactly is our agenda?

Or: our lawyers told us we better take this shit down, since half of it's lies.

...and when do we implement our conspiracy? and, uh, what is it? what are we taking over? i forgot.

yes, i think the nytw is closing its doors on the latest round in the brouhaha. now, they will circle the wagons of silence and hope that we will move on and everyone will forget the entire incident now that they are about to do the risque take off on Columbine.

poor new york, poor america, our reputation is ruined, ruined, ruined as the cultural mecca of the world. oh, my god, we're going to be known as, as, as, "philistines"!

and isn't that a little bit ironic...

Well, it's a bit rich complaining about people who "don't know" the facts when a large part of the controversy was explicitly diven by the NYTW changing their story every five minutes and being, shall we say, a little opaque on what was happening. All most people wanted, and certainly this was true in the beginning when it was asked again and again, was an explanation that added up.

My suspicion remains strongly that the NYTW was treating the Royal Court as standard cap-in-hand arts persons, and was very surprised when they took exception and aggressively defended their work.

Hush, freespeechlover! Do you want them to find out what our conspiracy is? Next thing, you'll be telling them about the secret decoder rings Playgoer gave us!
